Western Metalworx

How the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct is Driving Innovation and Collaboration for Western Metalworx

Western Metalworx, a leading WA-based precision engineering company, has long been recognised for its commitment to delivering tailored, high-performance solutions to some of Australia’s most advanced industrial and mining technology companies. In 2024, the company made a strategic move to join the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct (AARP), leveraging its unique capabilities to deepen collaboration, accelerate innovation, and support a growing client base, many of whom already have a presence at the AARP’s purpose-built, state-of-the-art testing and development facility.

Western Metalworx began using the AARP’s co-working and prototyping facilities to better service key clients also operating on-site. These include pioneering tech companies such as Epiroc, Tribe Tech Group and Australian Flow Batteries, each of which are developing next-generation systems for mining automation, decarbonisation, and energy storage.

For Olly, being based at the AARP allows Western Metalworx to be on the ground, where innovation is happening.

“We’re utilising the co-working space to be closer to our clients,” he says. “Having access to Epiroc, Tribe and Australian Flow Batteries in one location creates real-time collaboration opportunities you just can’t replicate when you’re flying in and out of sites.”

The ability to collaborate in person, refine ideas quickly, and iterate on prototypes without logistical delays has been a game-changer. Western Metalworx can now engage in rapid problem-solving and provide agile support to a number of clients, across multiple projects simultaneously. This proximity not only saves time and resources, but strengthens the relationships and trust needed to co-develop cutting-edge industrial technology.

The AARP’s strategic location just 35kms north of Perth has also played a critical role in Western Metalworx’s growth. It offers the scale and infrastructure of a major industrial hub, while remaining easily accessible for teams and clients.

As Olly explains, “The Precinct’s proximity to Perth, and the fact that we can support multiple clients in the same location, makes this a great investment for us.”

Beyond proximity and convenience, the AARP has created a unique ecosystem where innovation thrives. Startups and scaleups work side-by-side with established industry leaders, and the open-access nature of the site enables collaboration not just within client-supplier relationships, but across disciplines and technology platforms. For companies like Western Metalworx, this environment encourages experimentation, learning and growth.

Western Metalworx’s success story is a powerful example of how the AARP is delivering on its mission to foster innovation, enable collaboration, and support the next generation of advanced technology in WA. By removing barriers and creating shared infrastructure, the Precinct is helping companies like Western Metalworx push the boundaries of what’s possible, right here in Western Australia.
